About General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC):
GIC of India (GIC Re) is an Indian public company. It was the only reinsurance company in the Indian insurance market until the insurance market opened to foreign reinsurance actors at the end of 2016, including German, Swiss and French companies. GIC Re has headquarters in Mumbai. All general insurance activities in India have been nationalized by the Government of India (GOI) through the National Insurance Act of 1972 (GINA). 55 Indian insurance companies and 52 other general insurance companies from other companies were nationalized.
The General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC) was established in accordance with Section 9 (1) of GIBNA. Incorporation did on November 22, 1972, under the Companies Act of 1956 as a limited liability company. GIC has been trained to control and operate the property and accident business in India. The Government of India has transferred all assets and activities of nationalized general insurance companies to the GIC and other public sector insurance companies. After a merger and consolidation process, GIC reorganized with four wholly-owned subsidiaries: National Insurance Company Limited, New India Insurance Company Limited, Oriental Insurance Company Limited, and United India Insurance Company.
