About BBMP:
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is the administrative body responsible for the civic services and some infrastructure assets of the Greater Bangalore metropolitan area. It is the fourth largest municipal corporation in India and is responsible for a population of 6.8 million over an area of 741 km2. Its limits have multiplied more than ten times over the past six decades. Its duties and responsibilities include the “orderly development of the city”: zoning and building regulations, health, hygiene, licensing, trade, and education, as well as the quality of life issues such as open public spaces, water bodies, parks, and green spaces.
The BBMP represents the third level of government (the central and state governments are the first two levels). The BBMP is run by a municipal council composed of elected representatives, called “companies”, a representative of each of the districts of the city. Elections to the Council take place every five years and the results are decided by popular vote. Members contesting council elections represent one of the state’s political parties.
